Cucumbers are haram?!? LOL!

Holy vegetables! This was just too hilarious to pass up without sharing. If Adhaalath Party ever comes into power here, we can probably expect silliness and stupidy like this in Maldives too. Not that we don't have that in abundance here already but this is a totally different level, I wager.

Al-Qa'eda in Iraq alienated by cucumber laws and brutality
Al-Qa'eda is losing support in Iraq because of a brutal crackdown on activities it regards as un-Islamic - including women buying cucumbers.

Besides the terrible killings inflicted by the fanatics on those who refuse to pledge allegiance to them, Al-Qa'eda has lost credibility for enforcing a series of rules imposing their way of thought on the most mundane aspects of everyday life.

They include a ban on women buying suggestively-shaped vegetables, according to one tribal leader in the western province of Anbar.

Sights & Signs of Trivandrum

I was in Trivandrum in October last year and the one thing I regretted most was that my DSLR camera was broken. I especially regretted not having when I came across some amusing (to me) sights and sounds while there. Luckily I had my Nokia phone handy and even though the results weren't very good I brought back some fun memories from the trip. Others who don't have the fascination for silly puns that I have might not find these very funny but I sure

Dexter Season 3 Trailer

Still some time to go before Dexter, one of my favourite TV shows along with Lost and Supernatural, returns. This is the trailer for Season 3 and since the producers of the show have completely ignored the book series it is based on I'm really hyped about it. I mean the books were really lame compared to how good the series is. Anyway, enjoy the trailer and watch as the "student becomes the master" or

I had really been hoping that Terry Goodkind would not allow his Sword of Truth series of books to be made into movies. But that was before Lord of the Rings took the fantasy world by storm and after watching the trilogy I had hope that a decent movie could be made if they found a good enough director who was a fan of the books. And then Sam Raimi (Spiderman, Evil Dead, Xena, Hercules) decided to turn it into a TV series. I had mixed feelings about that.

Today I read Sam Raimi's interview at the Comic Con regarding the TV series (now called The Legend of the Seeker) which will premiere on 1st November, and I have to say he really got me excited about the series.

And then I saw the trailer.
The first 6 minutes of The Dark Knight

Just watched the first 6 minutes of Christopher Nolan's sequel to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight in Bluray and I have to say that if those few minutes are anything to go by then this movie is really living up to the hype and the rave reviews it has been getting.

I wanted to upload the clip but it's frikking 350MB so ditched the plan. But if anyone's interested I think it should be available on YouTube but not in Bluray quality. It's worth checking out, definitely.

Hmm, found the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QAKdqKaqGY

I wasn't too impressed by Heath Ledger's performance in the trailers for the movie I've seen but that six minutes nearly won me over. I'll still have to watch the whole movie before I'm convinced that his performance is as good as the critics seem to think. Strangely, no one seems to be comparing the movie to other superhero movies; it's getting compared to such great crime movies as Heat and The Godfather 2. Not a bad thing, mind you, but still strange.

Now...

Michael Turner is dead.

Michael Turner, one of my favourite comic book artists, is dead. First Carlin, and now Turner. :( Not a good month.

I was first introduced to Turner's work when I bought 'Fathom' from Amazon. The art, while not as spectacular as his later work, was impressive enough to make me keep a lookout for his work. Later his rendition of Batman in "Batman & Superman" series' second story arc blew me away and prompted me to buy some 'Witchblade' comics. I even bought 'Superman - Godfall' thinking it was illustrated by him (nope, except for the covers).
Although he excels at drawing hot-looking babes (not particularly realistic looking hot-babes but hot nevertheless) his backgrounds and vehicle designs are pretty cool too. Later he left Top Cow and started his own company Aspen. He's done a lot of memorable and spectacular covers for Marvel and DC since then especially during Marvel's Civil War. He was 37 years old when he died. He will be missed.

The Spiderwick Chronicles

To be honest I wasn't really expecting much from this movie. Although I've seen the books at Asters some years ago and known that the series was pretty popular among kids, I was still expecting a wannabe Harry Potter movie. Boy, was I wrong. This is so much better than most of the Harry Potter movies (except maybe with the exception of Prisoner of Azkaban) on so many levels.

Am I glad I watched in HD. The visual effects and CGI are drop-dead gorgeous and magical, better than anything I've seen in such a movie in a long time. The story took a few minutes to unfold but when the action begins it never allows you to sit back and take a breather. I guess the ending could have been better but I'm not really complaining; this is a kids' movie after all.

Too bad it didn't do that well at the box-office. It made around $70 million or something, I recall. So far anyway. The new Narnia movie, Prince Caspian, has made almost twice that but that is to be expected as the Chronicles of Narnia ...

Jumper

The trailer for this movie was good. Made me interested enough to go and read the books. The books were top notch and the characters in the books really captivated me. The movie however was... bleh!

I don't really understand how they could mess this up. Even the special effects were nothing exceptional; I think I liked the teleporting effect (BAMPF!) in X-Men better than this. It could have been done so much better. So could the movie.

What really spoils the movie isn't the action sequences or the special effects. It was the lame muddled-up couldn't-give-a-crap story. It started good but then just went nowhere with it. Nothing else to say other than that Hollywood just messed up a good sci-fi series again. Anywhere is possible, the movie tagline says, but the movie failed to convince me.

The open ending does leave the impression that there are more going on behind the scenes that what we've been shown so far but by then I couldn't care less.

Making Money

This book was a bit of a disappointment after reading the immensely satisfying Going Postal. I had thought that since both books were about the same character it would be quite as entertaining. But I guess now that it wasn't just the protagonist that really made the earlier book so fun.

Still, this isn't a bad book (there's no such thing as a bad book when it comes to Terry Pratchett) and it was quite entertaining, to an extent, but when I finished it I got this feeling that it could have been much, much better. Maybe the next one will be.

Edward Scissorhands

I know it's kind of an old movie but I love Tim Burton stuff so when I saw the Bluray version of this I just had to see it.

Since it's Bluray I won't talk about the astonishing quality except to say I was impressed and that now I really want to see Sleepy Hollow on Bluray.

Since I'd already seen this movie many times (first on VHS, then on VCD many times and at least twice on DVD) I just lay back and enjoyed all the detail that I had missed through on previous viewings.

The only thing that got to me was that all the new detail worked a bit against the movie in terms of the makeup effects. I mean the scratches and nicks on Depp's face looked too fake when seen in closeup detail. But still the movie was immensely enjoyable and I loved the art-direction and Tim Burton's skill at directing this kind of movies.

The story now seems (I guess that would happen with repeated viewings) kind of oversimplified and even pretentious and Hindi-like at times but I think the concept behin...

Going Postal

This was definitely the most enjoyable Discworld book I have read in a while. I can't remember when I enjoyed a Terry Pratchett book that wasn't about the Watch this much. This was not as funny as some of the books with the Watch in it but this is definitely and by far the most entertaining of all of Terry's books, with the possible exception of Jingo and Feet of Clay. At least for me.

Pratchett has created another extremely likable underdog character in Moist Von Lipwig. I wasn't much of a fan of some of Terry's recent heroes --such as William de Worde in The Truth -- but I hope Moist shows up again in more books. Next up: Making Money. I hear it continues Moist's tale, so it should be good.

This just keeps getting better and better. I wonder what they will find hehehe...

The Haa Dhaalu atoll Makunudhoo School closed its gates on Sunday as residents began digging the school grounds for the buried fanditha (hex) that is being alleged as the source of the strange illness that has been afflicting students of the school.

A senior official of the school said the school had been closed because the parents of the children refused to send them to school because those who had contacted the illness – being referred by the residents as ‘jinni bali’, which roughly translates to ‘illness caused by an evil spirit’ – were not getting better.

Fandithaverin (mystics who dabble in the supernatural) have been called in to combat the strange sickness that has been plaguing the students of Haa Dhaalu atoll Makunudhoo School for almost a month now.

Earlier, reports of students at the Haa Dhaalu atoll Makunudhoo School coming down sick with strange symptoms prompted the Education Ministry to send a team to the island to investigate. However, the residents of the island now believe that the sickness is caused by vengeful spirits or jinni and have brought mystics to read scripture throughout the island to exorcise them.

Tom Creepy... er Cruise's Scientology Video

I've been hearing about this video for some time now but only saw it today. I was wondering why everyone was referring to it as 'ultra-creepy' and after watching it I have to agree. His laughter, especially the one at the end, is really, really creepy.

Anyway, for those of you who haven't heard about it this is a video which shows Tom Cruise talking about his er ahem... religion, Scientology. I am not too familiar with the background of the video since I never bothered to find out but looks like a propaganda video for Scientology. Man did they make a bad decision in getting Tom to do it. He makes absolutely no sense and spends around 10 minutes to say absolutely nothing at all. But man, that creepy laughter. brrrr...

After watching the main video at the bottom, just for additional laughs, why not check out the great Tom Cruise impersonation below from the upcoming comedy Superhero Movie. The guy looks dead on. "I can eat... planets!" :D Killer stuff.
